Top Markets for Star Trek

Postby barbreader » Sat Aug 24, 2013 5:24 pm

Until Star Trek Into Darkness, "Domestic" sales for Star Trek (which apparently is defined as English-speaking North America, not just the United States) has long been the overwhelming customer base. STID has been floating along with near even 'Domestic' and 'Foreign' revenue. The percentages have been roughly Domestic 50.1 per cent to Foreign 49.9 percent, give or take 0.1 per cent, but always with a slight tip toward Domestic.

Of the 'foreign' (I'm not clear who made Canada and the US into one country, so I find this term bizarre. Long live Canada!) nations, until STID, the UK was No. 1, Germany No. 2., Austrailia No. 3., France No. 4. In contrast, the No. 1 spot for STID is China, the UK is 2, Germany 3 and Australia 4. I am not clear that that translates into back sales of the other 700+ hours of Trek to China, even without taking into account China's attitude that intellectual property rights are irrelevant.

The Fan Film community is yet to get the Chinese equivalent of Ulisses, the phenomenal Star Trek fan who has singlehandedly made about 100 Star Trek Fan Films available to Portuguese speakers. There are between 5 and 10 times as many people who speak or read Chinese to be reached by the Chinese Trek fan who undertakes this task. However, since those potential Chinese Trek fans have probably not even seen the officially made pro Trek, it may be that there is no real hurry on this. I turn to fan Trek because I am not a fan of reruns. As I like to tell people: I wanted to walk out the forth time I watched Hamlet. I'm just not a rerun person.

Other rapidly developing nations are also up and coming as Trek markets, particularly South Korea and Russia. No subtitlers exist for Russian or Korean either.

Do other people here have thoughts about the Star Trek market? Please join in.

Can't say I have any great insights, I can only comment on my own experience. :)

Of course, as soon as I post that... it flips. Now it's Domestic 49.6% Foreign 51.4%, and a total box office of $458,679,000 internationally, which compares with an international gross for JJA Trek I of 385,680,446, an increase of over 78 million dollars.

The numbers have continued to move, and it does look like this will be the first Star Trek Movie to collect more abroad than 'domestically' (albeit with the bizarre way of measuring domestic... as if Canada didn't win the War of 1812...)

Total Lifetime Grosses as of Sept 9, 2013 domestically, Sept. 8, 2013 overseas.
Domestic: $228,762,233 49.2%
+ Foreign: $236,600,000 50.8%

Total domestic is now $228,778,661 and foreign is not yet final, but it's already more... $238,200,000. It's official. This will have a larger foreign than domestic gross, a Trek first.

Some of the results for the DVD sales are in for STID. For the week ending Oct. 6, the numbers for DVD and Blu-ray looked like this, respectively:
Rank (last week's rank) title Sales total sales, dollars this week, total dollars, weeks since release
7 (3) Star Trek Into Darkness 39,441 800,614 $628,295 $12,568,031 4
6 (3) Star Trek Into Darkness 18,614 1,324,943 $464,607 $33,385,295 4

Total Lifetime Grosses (Domestic is US + Canada. Somebody should tell Hollywood that Canada won the war of 1812)
Domestic: $228,778,661 49.0%
+ Foreign: $238,586,585 51.0%
= Worldwide: $467,365,246

Total STID sales for tickets and DVD viewing exceed half a billion dollars. $513,318,572 and that's without Christmas sales.

Box sets with DVDs of both JJA's Star Trek and STID were:
27 Star Trek and Star Trek Into Darkness 14,815 111,728 $443,866 $3,347,379 3

The final 2013 numbers for DVDs and Blu-Rays are still to come.
